BADHOVEN – All The World’s A Fake

All The World’s A Fake“ unterwegs.

Well done Burschen!

Nun liegen sie mit ihrem sechsten Longplayer "All The World's A Fake" endlich auch wieder auf meinem Seziertisch.

Das Album beinhaltet mit "How Will It Be" und "Break All Chains" zwei Bonustracks. World Parkinson Congress in Kyoto, Japan, präsentiert wurde. Vom Feinsten

Jetzt – endlich – melden sich die Jungs mit “All The World’s A Fake” zurück.

Fazit: Gehört in jede anständige Melodic Rock-Sammlung! Und bitte mehr davon!

Badhoven

Obsession

Badhoven released their debut album “Behind the masquerade” 2001.  They followed this with “Believe” in 2005, and now eight years on, they’ve released their third album – Obsession.

Although Austria may not be known for it’s rock and metal music, it has produced somne great bands – Serenity and Visions of Atlantis being two of my favourites, and of course it’s home to Napalm Records.  Now though I can add another great band to the list of Austrian bands – Badhoven.

I have to admit my first thought on seeing the band name and the album cover with its picture based on a portrait of Beethoven was that this might be something like Trans-Siberian Orchestra witha  mix of clasical and rock, but that’s definitely not the case.  What you actually have is a great melodic rock album.

“She is so beautiful” is a great rock ballad.  It does seem that many bands feel a rock album isn’t complete without a ballad, and sometimes these work well and other times they just don’t fit in at all with the rest of the album.  Happily here we have a great track that feels at home on the album.

“When I found you” is the track I’d consider to be the weakest on the album.  It’s still a good song, but just doesn’t work as well as the other songs in my opinion.  The piano melody reminds me of Bruce Hornsby’s song “The way it is”.

“Legends of rock” is one of the best songs here – nice guitar riffs, good guitar solo and a strong chorus.

Badhoven is definitely a band well worth listening to if you’re a fan of melodic rock.

Track listing:

1. Obsession

2. Fight for our rights

3. Rock you hard

4. I will be there

5. More than a lifetime

6. Legends of rock

7. My brothers red guitar

8. She is so beautiful

9. When I found you

10. Time doesn’t matter at all

11. All or nothing

BADHOVEN – Obsession

The last group I can think of that broke out of Austria were the Von Trappe Family Singers who went on to find success in America. With the right kind of exposure I am sure Badhoven may be able to follow in their footsteps. The band have been together in various forms since 2001 and ‘Obsession’ is their third album.

Melodic classic rock played hard and heavy is the order of the day here. The band cite Whitesnake, Saga, Rainbow and Autograph amongst their influences and it shows in the quality of songs on offer. Title track ‘Obsession’ kicks things off with a heavy, rhythmic beat giving way to melodic rock of the highest standard. Kurt C on vocals puts in a good shift with a rich and sonorous voice that ably copes with all ranges. The talented Kurt also deals with guitar duties and can shred with the best of them.

As well as rocking hard, a good melodic rock album wouldn’t be complete without a heartfelt rock ballad and here ‘ She Is So Beautiful’ fits the bill perfectly. This is a classic ‘lighters in the air’ number that will melt the heart of even the most hardened cynic. It’s when the band are rocking out though that the band are at their most effective. The bluesy ‘Time Doesn’t Matter At All’ heads down the Thin Lizzy route whilst ‘All Or Nothing’ nods in the direction of MSG. Although the  band’s influences may be clear when listening through the album, they stamp their own identity on each track and are more than capable of producing quality numbers.

This is a fine album from an honest, hardworking band with a lot of talent. The hills are alive with the sound of hard rock!

Badhoven: "The band name resembles what the band does in terms of style, musicians and their background well."

Interview by Nilesh Ujawe

Austrian rockers Badhoven paid a visit to Ljubljana as they were supporting local hero Dr. Evil. We caught up with the band before they hit the stage and here are the excerpts from the conversation.

1. This is the first time that you are playing in Slovenia. Are you excited?

We are very excited. This club is just the right size.

2. You've been playing since 2001 as Badhoven…

Yes with this name, but we made music before that under a different name, Blackrose. We came together in 1995 and started in 1996 with the first album called “Blackrose”. We also released it in Japan a year later. Then in 1998 we released our second album “Time Doesn’t Matter at All”. By 2001 there were many bands named Blackrose so we thought of having a new name and also to go a bit more hard rock and thus Badhoven came into existence.

3. How did you decide on the name Badhoven?

It’s like a mixture of hard rock, harmonics and melody. The name resembles what the band does in terms of style, musicians and their background well.

4. The band’s latest album Obsession was released last year. Can you tell us something about it?

It’s the first album with our new bass player Erwin Lichtenegger who joined the band in 2009. A year before the release of this album we had released a single CD named “I will be There” and also shot a video for it. And then we started recording for a full length album.  There is a new kind of Badhoven on this album because Erwin joined the band and our sound went a bit more metal. There is a large variation with different types of rock music on this album. It’s a mixture of everything – classic, rock, hard rock and metal.

5. Are you satisfied with the end result?

Yes, we are very satisfied. Also the reviews that we have now are great and positive.

6. Can you tell us a little about the writing process?

There are so many different songs on this album. We re-recorded the old songs and wrote new ones in the studio. There are some which didn’t make it on the album. Kurt is the main song-writer and the rest of the band members are arrangers. We put the pieces together like a puzzle. We like this as there are many ideas flowing and sometimes we also end up changing the parts in the songs.

7. The artwork is very interesting. How did you come up with the idea of it?

The cover is designed by a tattoo artist who is a friend. His cousin made the first drawing of the picture. Firstly it was a handmade design and then it came to us and we digitalized it with some colour changes.

8. The band released a live DVD in 2007. How was the experience recording it?

It was great, like any other gig you need to come along the way you would as if there was no video. We had seven cameras and one chance to record it. One needs to find a balance between concentration and having fun. As we look back now, we can say that we were very focussed while recording it.

9. After the DVD you released Obsession in 2013. Is there is a reason behind such a long gap between the two?

Yes, after the last album “Believe” my brother who was the bassist had to leave the band due to his work commitments. After a long search we found Erwin and he found us. He was our sound engineer and did two live shows with us so we asked him if he wants to stay. He agreed and we came back together as a band.

10. What kind of music do you guys like to listen to?

Gerhard Paar : I listen to a lot of jazz, rock and also the real Austrian style music with accordion.

Gerd Sojka : For me it’s a mixture, I listen to bands like Whitesnake and Journey, classical music sometimes but mostly hard rock and melodic metal.

Erwin Lichtenegger : For me, heavy metal and death metal.

Kurt. C :  When I grew up I mostly listened to Beatles up to the age of 15 or 16. Then there was Whitesnake! Also during the 80’s Iron Maiden and many other great bands which influenced me.

11. Are you happy with the attention that you get in your home country Austria?

It’s different. It’s very hard to get on the radio however there are certainly some radio stations which try to get bands on air. It’s good to have concerts in Austria, Graz is a good place and so is Vienna. It’d be good for us to play in the western parts like Salzburg which we are trying to do.

12. Which is your favourite show that you’ve played so far?

It was when we supported the Graham Bonnet Band in Vienna. Also, the show when we were supporting Austrian hard rock band No Bros. This was also the farewell show for our ex-bassist and it was very special.

13. What are the band’s plans for the future?

Our plan is to play a lot of live shows and to release is new album in 2 years.

14. And lastly, what can we expect from Badhoven tonight?

A real hard rock and metal night. We will prepare the audience for Dr. Evil.

*LEGENDS OF ROCK* und *MY BROTHERS RED GUITAR*!!!

BADHOVEN’s new release comes after many years of hard work in the music business. “Believe” should go down as the best BADHOVEN CD to date. It has tons of AOR melodic tracks mixed with a heavy dose of keyboards by Gerhard Paar. Vocals by KC Greilberger are a blend of Tommy Shaw and Mike Reno with a more classical vibe. The songs flow well throughout the CD but I feel there is a missing element… Excitement. The songs are good but I don’t feel that drive for success.

BADHOVEN also included a video on the disc of the song “Believe” and as you will see by the video, which is a very good song, the drive and excitement is not there. The musicians are good, the songs are written well but the spark is not there. One song that really sticks out and is exceptional is “Black September Rain”, this song regardless of spark has the marking of a classic tune. The song is slow and melodic and would make a great soundtrack. I like this band but maybe being in this music business for fifteen years and really not making an impact is discouraging. The new disc has some good songs if you’re into slow melodic tunes. Also, one last note KC Greilberger plays some killer riffs on “I’m Your Man”. BADHOVEN at times sounds like a mild version of NIGHT RANGER. I wish these boys well in the future and I hope they get some excitement in the band, if they do this band will be a band to be reckoned with.
